Demidov's approach was largely forgotten back in the 1930's as Stanislavski's system took the world by storm. Lacking star power or hype, it was dormant until the late 90's and early 2000's when his Archive began to be explored in earnest by Andrei Malaev-Babel, who has spend the last two decades as Demidov's most passionate ambassador all around the world.
- How does this approach work with others I've tried like Meisner, Michael Chekhov, etc.?
You'll find that Demidov's approach, when fully explored and understood, doesn't need extra support. Demidov provides a way for an actor to approach a role holistically, completely. Once you've worked in Demidov, you'll realize you don't need a 'toolbox' any longer.
- Where can I see this work being done?
There is no theater or ensemble dedicated to putting this work on, aside from certain productions at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory in Sarasota, FL, where Andrei is the head of the graduate acting program. But what that means is WE can be the ones to put this work to the stage! A dedicated ensemble of Demidov actors serving Chicago is my goal.
- Do you hold classes regularly?
See, here's the thing - I'm an actor, first and foremost. Thus, if I get cast in a show, that blocks out a lot of my calendar for a while. It's difficult to plan too far ahead when that cycle happens again every few months. I typically wait to receive a rehearsal schedule, then I can get a class planned for my nights off, but that's always anybody's guess.
